On November 2, 2023, Galerie gezwanzig hosted the finissage of Gerhard Himmer’s exhibition »Inverse Painting« which attracted numerous art lovers to the newly adapted premises of the Viennese gallery for contemporary art. Himmer, known for his striking, abstract works, was the first artist to open the exhibition at Galerie gezwanzig and made a powerful statement with his works.
In his works, Himmer deals intensively with the materiality and movement of color. His art is characterized by the interplay of gravity and chemical reactions, which he uses in a targeted manner to create dynamic surface structures. In the exhibition, large-format canvases were shown on which viscous oil paint slowly poured over the picture surface, creating shimmering, dense worlds of color. This technique led to exciting visual effects that conveyed both depth and movement.
The exhibition was very well received by visitors, who found the newly designed gallery space to be successful and harmonious. The minimalist, open spaces perfectly showcased Himmer’s work, inviting visitors to focus entirely on the effects of color and surface textures. The harmonious interplay of space and work was widely praised and underlined the fine curation of the exhibition.
The finissage was an atmospheric conclusion to this successful exhibition, at which Galerie gezwanzig showed itself to be a new but promising address for contemporary art.
