In the exhibition »Geometric Sensations« at the Museum of Perception MUWA, Esther Stocker presents a careful selection of her works, including both two-dimensional pictures and three-dimensional objects. The centerpiece is an installation specially developed for the space, which impressively showcases Stocker’s unmistakable style.

The artist uses only black and white lines to create complex structures that work both on the surface and in space. Her works are based on the idea that the world is structured by lines – a concept she described as the »skeleton of existence« in an interview with Alberto Fiore in 2011. For Stocker, these lines are not only formal, but existential, as they form the basis of all movement and architecture. Her artworks oscillate between order and its deliberate dissolution. She often achieves this balance through subtle shifts within her linear systems.

Her more recent works in particular, in which she manipulates three-dimensional structures by crumpling the surfaces, demonstrate her ability to alienate the geometric in unusual ways and at the same time explore the limits of perception. Excerpt from the exhibition »About the Grid and the art to revolt against order«, For me, the “deformation” of a grid has something to do with gravity and existence and our desire to overcome these limitations. In a highly absurd way, we want to overcome something on which we are simultaneously dependent in the sense of gravity. This collision is the prerequisite for a free experimental field of forms, not least in order to come closer to an existential truth.

With »Geometric Sensations«, Stocker makes it clear that her work is based less on strict mathematical principles and more on an intuitive approach. Visitors not only experience the works as viewers, but also enter into an interactive dialog with the constantly changing geometric structures through their individual perspectives and movements.
